"What if... every language that had been lost to E "What if... every language that had been lost to English, every word, every syllable grew up out of the ground in flowers"

The fifth and final episode of "How to Lose Everything" the series is "Grape Soda in the Parking Lot," written by Taqralik Partridge, animated by Megan Kyak-Monteith and co-directed by them both.

Stories about loss by nature look to the past. Episode three and this episode give us a sense of the future, and I wanted to end the series with Taqralik's dreaming: what if?

I first learned of Taqralik's spoken word work when she performed at an Inuit showcase @infonwia had in 2015. When I was thinking who I'd want involved in the series, I heard her voice instantly.

Taqralik introduced me to @mk.monteith’s work, and there, too, I instantly fell in love with her dancing paintings.

They are both remarkable artists. This film is stunning.

When I first read Smokii’s poem, I cried. As so When I first read Smokii’s poem, I cried.

As someone who’s written lyrics about a lot of other people, I haven’t experienced people writing about me very often!

Though “There Are Hierarchies of Grief” is not about me, I am in it.

Cleverly, beautifully, @smokiisumac wove me into his poem about three bereaved mothers he knows; about who he looked to for guidance in grief.

And when it came to looking for grief stories for “How to Lose Everything” the series, Smokii knew this poem was a fit.

He was right.

When I first saw @meky.ottawa animation and illustrations, I fell in love with how she uses colours and lines. We’d never met before I asked if she’d direct one of these episodes; I’m so grateful she said yes!

Episode four of How to Lose Everything is available in English and Ktunaxa – stream it now on CBC Gem.

For my sons, I got the marigold and lilies of valley — their birth month flowers, drawn by their father — in 2012, six years after my first son’s death and three years after my second’s.

And this year, for my five year old daughter, this perfect little backpack.

Drawn by @joeyoneil and tattooed by @jacqueline.stormhorsetattoo at @stormhorsetattoo

As my third kid grows, this backpack will forever* hold how I’ve gotten to know her so far: organized, nurturing, creative, and always bringing snacks.

How does one make a comic accessible? I've learne How does one make a comic accessible?

I've learned that a combination of text transcripts and image descriptions are key, and I've had the enormous honour of our comic “Petal to the Mettle," being made accessible.

Amber Griffith wrote about the process of creating the text transcript and it's FASCINATING.

Check it out -- and get a text version of "Petal to the Mettle" -- at howwellproject.org/accessibility

...comic? Petals? What? you say?

In 2021, @gee_webber invited me to collaborate on a comic for the anthology "the How Well? Project".

I wrote about getting my flower leg made, and I learned so much from Georgia who illustrated it!

The anthology is wonderful. (Yes that’s me on the cover, also illustrated by Georgia.) The accessible text version is brilliant.

Thank you, Amber and @howwellproject!
