Day twelve and we’re enjoying a day off in Onanole, Manitoba, where the latest snow fall (!) is quickly melting in the sun sun sun. I’m about to get a massage at Elkhorn (bliss!) and work some of the long drives out of my shoulders…
I’m in love with this tour, I gotta say. Every single show has been fantastic, and after taking so much time off from the road I couldn’t ask for a warmer return.
Gaby and I continue to Announce The Keys (and it remains a necessity…), the rental car is covered in mud on the outside (thanks to the GPS being hell-bent on back dirt roads during rain storms) and encrusted with granola in the backseat on the inside (oops), we’ve only lost one toothbrush and one sock, and we’ve gained the purchase of the original Broadway recording of RENT. Sing-alongs abound.
Day one on the west coast and we’re off to a good start! I almost lost the car keys leaving them on a friend’s stairs and Gaby almost lost them by leaving them at the coffee grinder in the Save-On in Nanaimo… thus we’ve developed a habit of near constantly announcing where the keys are to each other (routine will come quickly…) Backstage at the Duncan Showroom the zipper on my green “Long Time Leaving” shorts split open and trying to take them off was a challenge I’m glad only Gaby was there to witness… but then the “moon” at the back of the room at the showroom shone on our skin that was still warm from the sun, and Chris Ho opened the night with busy bees and flightless war, and all was, undeniably, well.
After three months at home I am gearing up to be back on the road. After these next few weeks of touring I’ll be taking a longer break to shift my focus on making the next album (yee!) so I’m going to be soaking these up as much as I can. I love touring – I’ve missed it and I’ll miss it again. (more…)

Last week, Ian Sherwood and I embarked on a week tour. “5 Days in May” we called it, though I actually only joined the bill for four, and we wove our way around beautiful British Columbia.
I was reminded of three things I love about touring:
1) Getting to hear other musicians. Ian is a fantastic songwriter and performer and I loved getting to watch and hear him four nights in a row. Here is is being marvelous at the Bluebelle Bistro in Kaslo:
2) Getting to visit beautiful places, via scenic drives (ok not always, but this tour in its well timed brevity didn’t have a grey day or bad view in it, from Vancouver to Kelowna, Silverton, Kaslo, Penticton, Ashcroft and back). Here I am in New Denver:
3) Getting to see family and friends I don’t see often enough. Here two of my beautiful cousins and I, in Kelowna:
The next tour will be in July – see you then musicians/places/friends!
We all have our strengths and natural aptitude. Mine is not a green thumb. I’ve a few houseplants that I constantly yank from the brink of death and many that I never could maintain or save. The three stalks of “fool-proof” bamboo I was given have even dwindled to one. I gaze out at my patio and admire my dirt/weed garden where nothing I’ve tried to cultivate has lasted, and I don’t mind. (more…)
