I almost didn't make it down to the water. My bo I almost didn't make it down to the water. My boyfriend and I made it through the trees of Bruce Peninsula Park to Indian Head Cove and a rocky climb down the cliff to the blue green water. The descent looked dicey to tackle on one leg, and I needed a rest after the walk there. I sat in a sweet spot of shade and watched my sweetheart go ahead and find sunny spots on the beach. The view was beautiful. The day was beautiful. My love was taking pictures and adorably shouting back to me what they saw. But I found it hard to accept that I couldn't make the rest of the climb down to see it myself. Thirty+ years in this one-legged body and when I bump into my physical limitations, I still feel frustrated. Disheartened. Like I'm left out of something better. Not always, but more than I like to admit. I watched others make the descent, and I looked closely from above where I could make the safest trip down. If I used my hands, if I sat on my bum for part of it, I was pretty sure I could do it. Slowly, stubbornly, I climbed down the rocks to this one, to this edge of Lake Huron. There won't always be a safe or accessible route for me -- I still need and want to work on accepting that reality -- but I'm so glad there was this time. This book is out TODAY! When I was first pregnant This book is out TODAY! When I was first pregnant, I felt very alone as a disabled parent-to-be. There is just about zero representation of disabled parents out there and not many more resources, if you can find your way to them. Yet there are SO MANY brilliant disabled parents. Enter this collection edited by @elizahull which features Deaf, disabled, neurodiverse and/or chronically ill folks sharing the highs and lows of their parenting journey. I’m so honoured that Eliza interviewed me for one of the chapters. It’s among essays by @nina_tame @marjorieaunos @thecatchpoles @sitting_pretty… so MANY! That's how the "About" section of Greenwood Coalition's website ends and it beautifully summarizes their philosophy and actions to use a community model of caring; to walk alongside people living with poverty, mental illness, substance dependency and other disability, in Port Hope, Ontario. I first met David Sheffield of @greenwoodcoalition in 2012 when I played some songs and had good conversations with folks there. It was so meaningful (and so FUN!) for bekky and I to bring How to Lose Everything, the series, to Greenwood's gathering Imaginate last week. It's so meaningful to stay connected to this community and work over the years. Here's to more eating, singing, grieving and celebrating to come. After talking online for three years, bekky and I After talking online for three years, bekky and I got to talk IN PERSON! And for the first time, we got to share the films with an audience. In the same room. Like, actual physical space where we were all breathing and feeling together and it was WONDERFUL. In March 2020, @bekkyoneil and I met in a coffee shop to talk about making one film together -- "How to Lose Everything: A Field Guide." Well, you know what global event meant we met on zoom every time since, and that one film grew into the whole big beautiful series "How to Lose Everything." And bekky and @cardboardrealitystudio stayed an integral part, animating the opening title sequence of the series and the episode "Heart Like a Pow Wow." It's been a joy working with bekky, and it was a DELIGHT to be on stage to share more about the art we made. Thank you @greenwoodcoalition for bringing us together at Imaginate! Animation was the perfect medium for grief. Line Animation was the perfect medium for grief. Line by line, frame by frame (all 3,000+ watercolour images!), the laborious process of animating felt like the slowness of grief — the necessity of taking one step at a time. It doesn’t always feel like you’re getting anywhere with those steps until the day you can look back and see all the work that brought you to where you are. I LOVE seeing this process from @bekkyoneil, how her hands built our film “How to Lose Everything: A Field Guide” step by step. Posted @withregram • @cardboardrealitystudio I spent some time this week returning to the work in progress videos for “How To Lose Everything: A Field Guide” most from way back in 2020, to prepare for tomorrow’s (Friday) presentation with my incredible collaborator @christacouture at Imaginate conference at @capitoltheatreporthope hosted by @greenwoodcoalition. One of the reasons we love animation is it makes the hand of the artist (always present) much more visible than in other forms, and especially documentary forms.
