GIVEAWAY! Now that How to Lose Everything the ser GIVEAWAY!

Now that How to Lose Everything the series is available globally, I want to give away the very last HtLE tote bag!

Only 15 of these bags were hand silkscreened by @greenbyhand and given to the artists who worked on the series. BUT THERE'S ONE LEFT OVER.

The design is based on the How to Lose Everything series opener which is based on the cover of memoir which uses the floral print on my leg. What can I say, I love that floral. 🌸

To enter, simply leave a comment or emoji, a paragraph or a string of words, whatever you want to use to tell me how you're doing today.

That's been my prompt every time I've given something away and I find it makes us all feel a little less alone. I'm grateful for that.

On Saturday December 9, I'll use an online thingy to draw one comment to send the bag to.

And then you can not lose things by keeping them in the lovely, thick (no flimsy totes on my watch) How to Lose Everything bag.

So, how are you feeling?

It's International Day of Persons with Disabilitie It's International Day of Persons with Disabilities, folks!

In response to this ableist world that tells me in countless ways I'm not good enough because I'm disabled, I sometimes lean into a different extreme, shouting from mountaintops, I SWEAR TO YOU I LOVE BEING DISABLED!

And I do, most of the time. Which is to say I love myself.

What I don't love is being in pain. I don't love intrusive questions. I don't love that I can't access the same spaces as non-disabled people can.

But I certainly don't hate being disabled.

Being disabled is inextricable from who I am. If my leg hadn't been amputated when I was 13, I would have grown into a very different person. The person I am here and now, in my heart and mind, would not exist.

Here's me a few weeks ago in a lovely moment of autumn light and colours, and me, years ago ,when I was first learning to walk with a prosthetic leg.

In the second photo, at 13, I didn't yet know how much hate and exclusion disabled people experience.

In the first photo, at 45, I know the fierce love and disability community that has taught me something different — for all bodies.

One of the best ways to humanize an experience that isn’t yours is to take in the perspectives of those with that experience.

So if you are non-disabled, read some Eli Clare, some Kaleigh Trace, some Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, Syrus Marcus Ware… and others!

Listen to some Rae Spoon, Molly Joyce, Prudence Mabhena… and others!

Happy IDPD, all. Consider access, care and interdependence in your life. Make change ✨

About How to Lose Everything:

How to Lose Everything is a series of Indigenous animated short films that explore personal stories of loss. From instructions on how to survive tragedy, to parallels between two Scottish and Inuit communities, to a bear named Jesus, the five stories span nations, languages, and perspectives on heartache.

Megan Kyak-Monteith's animation is like watching a Megan Kyak-Monteith's animation is like watching a moving painting.

She captures the oil pastel images frame by frame as she creates them on a glass surface, sometimes with a painted backdrop underneath.

Watch the film closely for when she "erases" and creates new lines: they're my favourite moments of movement and change in the film.

With twelve festivals and counting, "Grape Soda in the Parking Lot" has been on big screens around the world and is now available on YouTube from @cbcarts

Music by Inge Thomson

Grape Soda in the Parking Lot is the fifth and final episode in the series of Indigenous animated short films, "How to Lose Everything" available on @cbcgem and YouTube

What if every language that had been lost to Engli What if every language that had been lost to English — every word, every syllable — grew up out of the ground in flowers?

In “Grape Soda in the Parking Lot”, Taqralik Partridge’s grandmother’s Scottish Gaelic and her father’s Inuktitut unfold in memories of her family, of pain, and of love.

Through Megan Kyak-Monteith’s incredible oil pastel animation, Inuit towns and Scottish landscapes move through memory and into a vision of the future.
